Geronimo
Trefon was one of 9 D.A.R.E. Students selected from across
the country to participate in an adventure trip to an
exclusive ranch in Montana for 4 days. 5.11 Tactical
recently launched a new flashlight that charges very
quickly. As part of the launch they announced support for
D.A.R.E. America and a Nationwide Competition for deserving
D.A.R.E. students. D.A.R.E. Officers from across the country
submitted essay's about deserving D.A.R.E. Students.
Trooper Vanessa Meade submitted her student Geronimo. The
winning essay is below:
5.11
Light for Life Foundation Recommendation
Student: Geronimo Trefon
Male, 11 years old
Nondalton, Alaska
I am writing to
nominate Geronimo Trefon for the 5.11 Light for Life
Foundation’s wilderness trip to Montana. I am an Alaska
State Trooper and work in a rural area in southwest Alaska
that is only accessible by airplane. There are six Alaska
Native villages in the area that I provided law enforcement
for. To conduct law enforcement activities, Troopers in
rural Alaska often travel by airplane, four-wheeler, snow
mobile, and boat to reach the villages in this remote area.
I am also a D.A.R.E. officer and started a D.A.R.E. program
at the Nondalton school in October 2008. Geronimo Trefon
was one of my students.
Geronimo Trefon is a bright, articulate, and helpful
young man. He was always engaged in the D.A.R.E. class and
strives to do his best. The village he is from, Nondalton,
with a population of about 200 people, is an Athabascan
Alaska Native village that is at the edge of Lake Clark
National Park. Geronimo is an engaging young man who could
be called the village “host”. If you arrive in Nondalton,
chances are Geronimo will greet you and find out why you are
there. His warm smile and positive attitude is reflected
throughout the village and the school. He participated
fully in the D.A.R.E. program with enthusiasm and
commitment. He was the first to raise his hand to answer
questions and assisted his classmates throughout the D.A.R.E.
classes. Similar to many areas in Alaska, the village has
problems with drug and alcohol abuse. He has seen the
effects of substance abuse on his people and his family. I
have received permission from his family to share their
story.
In November of 2007, Geronimo and his family lost their
oldest brother, Woody, in a motor vehicle collision in
Nondalton. He was stuck and killed by a four-wheeler that
was driven by a driver under the influence. I was the
responding officer in the case and witnessed first-hand the
shock and grief the family felt. Woody was only twenty
years old and was known in the village for refusing to use
alcohol and drugs. The whole community felt a tremendous
loss. Clyde and Valerie Trefon, Geronimo’s parents, have
struggled with alcohol issues and have been sober for five
years. They have maintained their sobriety, even through
their grief, and continue to provide an example of living a
life of sobriety in the village.
I believe Geronimo has amazing leadership potential and
is the example of what the D.A.R.E program is all about;
providing young people with the tools to resist alcohol and
substance abuse. His family embraces their cultural
heritage and participates in a traditional subsistence
lifestyle. Geronimo is learning from his family and through
programs such as D.A.R.E., that it is possible to live
without substance abuse in his life. I believe this trip
would be an excellent reward for Geronimo Trefon’s
enthusiasm and commitment to his family and his community.
He is a bright light in his village and this trip will
continue to reinforce values and ideas that will help him
maintain a substance free life and continue his development
as a leader in his village.

April 21-22, 2009
Chugiak
High School put on the "Every 15 Minutes" program.
Spearheaded by Chugiak High Schools SRO Officer Wendi Shackelford,
this two-day program vividly and dramatically highlights the
consequences of drinking and driving. The program started on
April 21 with an all school assembly outdoors that involved
a realistic crash scene. Students participated as crash
victims during this re-enactment. Local police and fire
departments responded to the 'crash scene'. One student was
arrested and charged with being the 'drunk
driver', and went to jail. She spent the
rest of the day going through the entire court proceedings
and her parents participated in this as well. Other students
were taken to local area hospitals, and finally one student
was pronounced dead on the scene.
For
the rest of the day, every 15 minutes the 'Grim Reaper'
would
enter the classroom and identify a student that had been
killed in a drinking and
driving accident.
These students had their faces painted and were not able to
communicate with the other
students in the school. Parents also participated in this
exercise, receiving notification calls and one parent
arrived at the accident scene to identify her child.
The
morning of April 22 a memorial service was held during an
all school assembly for all of the students that were
killed in drinking and driving accidents. Parents and
relatives of the
deceased
students attended the ceremony. Video was shown of the
previous days crash scene and the court room scenes.
Selected students and parents read letters of what they did
not get to say or do with their
parent/child. Mike Buckington, a former Washington State
Trooper spoke to the students and received a standing
ovation. Finally, SRO Officer Wendi Shackelford from the
Anchorage Police Department
addressed the students and attendees, her message was clear
and strong to all assembled, be safe, do not become a
statistic. This writer was in attendance at both events and
during both assemblies, the students were attentive and very
quiet.
It appeared to this writer
as though the event had an impact on the students as some
quietly wept.

Soldotna Chamber of Commerce 2007
Individual “Devoted Service to Youth” Award
Making
a difference in the lives of our youth. This was just one of
the many statements that embodies this year’s recipient of
the Devoted Service to Youth award. The ability to
connect with the youth has allowed this person to transcend
boundaries and to wear many hats including those of a
parent, a counselor, a friend and when appropriate a
disciplinarian. Through encouraging students to make good
decisions both at school as well in our community, this
individual has truly led by example. This individual
is noted for the impressive level of respect with which he
treats young people. As a coach in Boys & Girls Club
programs, as well as in the soccer and basketball programs
at Soldotna Middle School, this individual brings a level of
enthusiasm to the table that is hard to match. Whether
through chaperoning youth dances or organizing track meets,
this individual strives to create a safe and fun environment
for students. We will never know the full extent to
which this individual has impacted formidable young lives as
the DARE Officer, but we do know that his compassion and
dedication to this community’s youth made him our unanimous
recipient of the 2006 Devoted Service to Youth award,
Officer Tony Garcia.
